What is engine carbon cleaning?

What are carbon deposits and what is decarbonisation?

(Carbon) Deposits are a by-product of combustion. These deposits attach themselves to many parts of the engine, including those critically important to the performance and economy of the engine - Fuel Injectors, Piston Rings and various sensors. If fuel injectors are dirty this will interfere with the efficiency and effectiveness of the fuel spray pattern. Deposits behind piston rings will restrict the ability of the rings to seal and therefore can cause a loss of compression (essentially the engine’s power).

Decarbonisation or engine carbon cleaning usually refers to the process of removing carbon deposits. BG Products develop and manufacture their own high quality chemistry and delivery systems to do this, safely and effectively. Other proprietary systems use different classes of chemistry, hydrogen, hot water or warm oil.

Who are BG Products?

BG Products were formed way back in 1972 in Wichita, Kansas, USA and have a significant catalogue of collaborations with OEM’s in finding solutions to deposit and sludging issues. The Company believes that all combustion engine vehicles are affected by carbon deposit issues – because burning fuel releases carbon – always!

BG prefer not to comment on the effectiveness of other cleaning methods and services. BG Products do, however, regularly demonstrate and publish their results, for instance, showing that BG fuel system cleaners contain more of the chemistry recommended by the engine manufacturers themselves to remove the hard baked carbon deposits that interfere with efficient flow of air and fuel, throughout the entire system.

How will carbon cleaning benefit my vehicle?

Normal servicing does not clean the inside of an engine. And as deposits are a natural ongoing by-product of combustion, without preventative maintenance they will accumulate over time.

BG recommend a dedicated, dual approach – one product for the top half of the engine, to tackle fuel system issues and one for the bottom half, the oil system.

  • Fuel System: Deposits attach themselves to valves, piston crowns and fuel injectors. When fuel injectors get deposits on their fine spray holes (which they inevitably do) it can interfere with the ability of the injector to atomise the fuel into the engine. A fuel system cleaner will help to stop this happening and keep your engine running optimally.
  • Oil System: Cylinder compression is vital for a vehicle’s Power and Economy. As a vehicle’s piston moves it squeezes a fuel/air mixture in the cylinder, giving it explosive power. Rings around each piston ensure a good seal. Loss of compression (and therefore power) is usually due to deposits restricting these rings. A BG Engine Performance Restoration flush will clean deposits from rings, restoring peak compression, ensuring maximum Power and Efficiency.

These two factors - Injector spray pattern + Engine Compression - are Vital to Maintaining and Restoring Power & MPG.
